Good Spring Morning!

May is always an exciting month here at the Visitor Center. Summer is ramping back up and the entire area prepares to welcome visitors. This year we’ve seen a marked increase in year round tourism, the shoulder season (March-April) that would normally be pretty dead was our best shoulder season yet! This summer is shaping up to be no different!

As you welcome your own guests to town we’d like to invite you to come participate in all that Lead has to offer. Don’t have guests coming? Well play tourist in your own backyard! Even as I talk to friends they sometimes haven’t explored our many awesome attractions.

Obviously start at the our Visitor Center – we give you a glimpse into Lead’s past giving a short history of how the Homestake Mining Company shaped our town, our present and future with what’s happening at the Lab with neutrino and dark matter research.

After you’ve explored our free exhibit space, hop on the trolley (now run by Visit Lead) and take a guided tour of Lead and the Hoist Room (starting mid May).

Don’t miss tours of the Homestake Opera House and the simulated underground tour at the Black Hills Mining Museum. These are all options that are particularly good when the weather isn’t quite nice enough to explore outdoors – because we certainly have so much outdoor recreation to enjoy as well!
